ABOUT KIMONOS

In this section you will find all important information about Kimonos.

Kimono simply means "something to wear". On the other side, it is wearable art, as every Kimono is handmade and has a one-of-a-kind pattern. It's highly unlikely you will find two Kimonos that are identical. A Kimono is a long Japanese traditional dress that wraps around the body and has distinctively voluminous sleeves. They all have a different symbolic meanings. The colours, pattern, and length of the sleeves for example can tell you something about the person wearing it or the origin of the fabric. As this is not our main focus with Infinit Kimono to explain the Japanese Kimono tradition in detail, you can find much information on the internet these days. Traditionally it is tied around the waist with a so-called Obi belt (a long decorative belt that is wrapped around the body to wear a Japanese kimono or yukata). For a more casual look, many women wear it open or with a matching obi-strap or belt that you like from their own collection wrapped around the waist.

Kimonos are handmade by a grandmother or family member to fit the person it is made for. Usually, all Kimonos are "one size fits all". As the Kimono is worn traditionally with an Obi belt ( a long decorative belt that is wrapped around the body to wear a Japanese kimono or yukata) they can appear as too long! This is because you need this length if you use the complex obi technic to wrap it around your waste. In modern times like these, we use the single obi strap ( see accessories on our website) or a belt at your liking. If you wish to customize it and make it fit you more, shorten it, or make it tighter, we advise you to bring it to a local tailor. You can also make many beautiful things with the fabrics. See our Customized section or read a blog post on what can be done from Kimono.

Kimonos can be made from silk, cotton, linen, or viscose. Some are made from synthetic materials but we try not to select them. Silk Kimonos are very sophisticated, elegant, and fully breathable. They make you feel cool on a warm day and warm on a cool day. It’s a timeless piece. Silk is also known as a protective fabric. So when you have an "off-day" or feeling vulnerable it is really the best thing to put on your skin. Keep in mind that we cannot guarantee the exact fabric the vintage Kimono is made of as vintage fabrics have no label. Fabrics can easily be up to 8-100 years old.Always dry-clean your Vintage Kimono!

For the best experience, wear something underneath it, like a cotton top and leggings. Or just wear it with your favorite jeans. It’s a perfect garment to take your outfit from plain or sophisticated and chic with minimal effort. Thus Kimono can be worn on various occasions. It is something you can wear when you wake up with your first cup of tea or coffee in the morning. You bring it to the sauna (preferably a cotton one) or just feel and look fancy doing grocery shopping. It is great for meditation or on the beach. It can be worn as an overcoat, casual dress or to wear it to a party. You can even marry in one. That is how universally beautiful they are.

Most of the kimonos are made of silk or a combination of natural fabrics and therefore you should dry clean only. Silk and water are not exactly a match made in heaven if it comes to Vintage Kimonos. Vintage Kimonos are treated with an anti-moth product. The typical smell from the anti- moth product will be released once the Vintage Kimono comes in contact with water. You should avoid contact with water at all times. If you are a happy owner of a cotton kimono you can hand wash it in cold water. Washing a Vintage Kimono is at your own risk and we cannot be held accountable for the result. We do not take back or refund your purchase of washed Vintage Kimonos.

The reason why some of the Vintage kimonos have these typical brown kimono dots (mostly inside) is because they are old, even antique and moist can enter it. This is unavoidable. But nevertheless we will try to offer you the most spotless ones. If you purchase an Antique or very old Vintage Kimono, the brown spots mostly cover the inside lining and are actually a prove that it is a very old one. A sign of the times.Keep in mind that no Vintage kimono is spotless. They all will have some Wabi-sabi*.

*Wabi-sabi Imperfection.

Vintage Kimonos are imperfect and thus invite us to look beyond the first layer of appearance, and teach us to appreciate their different sense of beauty. Wabi-sabi in Japanese means the beauty of the fleeting, changeable, and imperfect nature of the world around us. It teaches us that instead of searching for beauty in perfection, we should look for it in things that are flawed and incomplete. That is why Japanese place such value on an irregular or cracked teacup. Only things that are imperfect, incomplete and ephemeral can truly be beautiful, because only those things resemble the natural world.
